Anasuya Sengupta’s happiness has no limits because she won the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival and created history by becoming the first Indian actor. Anasuya received the award in the Un Certain Regard section for playing the character of Renuka in ‘The Shameless’ film.

About The Shameless

The Shameless is a crime drama thriller in which Anasuya plays the role of a sex worker who runs away from a Delhi brothel after murdering a cop. It is directed and written by Bulgarian director Constantin Bojanov and stars Omara and Auroshikha Dey.

In the conversation with the Hindustan Times, Anasuya talked about her winning moments and said, “Firstly, I did not believe in my eyes that it was happening in reality; however, I shakily walked onto the stage and shared the stage with the artists whom I admired, my heroes, and it just felt oddly natural to be welcomed with so much genuine love by them. I am thankful to the jury for appreciating and seeing my hard work.”

Anasuya Sengupta dedicated her award to the queer community

Anasuya, after winning the award at the 77th Cannes Film Festival dedicated to the queer community, said in her winning speech, “I dedicate this and so much more to the queer community and other marginalized communities all over the world. They bravely fight battles that they should not have to. You don’t have to be queer to fight for equality, and you don’t have to be colonized to understand that colonizing is wrong. We just need to be very, very decent human beings.”

About Anasuya Sengupta

Anasuya was born and raised in Kolkata, and she pursued a Bachelor of Arts degree in English literature from Jadavpur University. After that, she moved to Mumbai in 2013 to make a career in the film industry. She starts working as a production designer, and later she designs the set for the famous Netflix show “Masaba Masaba.”

Her acting career started when she worked in a supporting role in the 2009 Bengali film “Madly Bangalee,” which was directed by Anjan Dutt. She also worked in theater, and she got the lead role in “The Shameless,” which made her the first Indian to win the Best Actress award at the Cannes Film Festival 2024.
