Payal Kapadia created history as the first Indian to win the Grand Prix for ‘All We Imagine As Light’

The filmmaker Payal Kapadia created history at the Cannes Film Festival 2024 when she received the prestigious Grand Prix award for her drama “All We Imagine as Light.” 

Payal’s film got the second-most prestigious prize of the festival after the Palme d’Or on the last day of the 77th Cannes Film Festival.

Payal Kapadia’s directorial debut with All We Imagine as Light premiered on May 23rd, was praised by international critics and received positive feedback. In addition, it received an 8-minute standing ovation from the audience. Payal’s film became the first Indian film in 30 years and the first by an Indian female director to show her talent in the main competition.

About All We Imagine As Light

All We Imagine as Light is based on the story of a nurse named Prabha, and her life takes an unexpected turn when Prabha receives a mysterious gift from her estranged husband and her roommate Anu, who is looking for a quiet place to spend time with her lover. One day they both decide to go on a trip to the coastal town, where they get a place to fulfill their dreams and desires.

‘All We Imagine as Light’ is an Indo-French collaboration that is co-produced by Petit Chaos from France and Chalk and Cheese Films from India. It is directed by Payal Kapadia and features Kani Kusruti, Chhaya Kadam, and Divya Prabha.

About Payal Kapadia

Payal Kapadia is a former student of the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII). Payal is known for her best work in the documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing,” which premiered at the Cannes Film Festival 2021, where she won the Golden Eye award. Her short film, Afternoon Clouds, was the only Indian film selected for the 70th Cannes Film Festival.

Furthermore, at the 2024 Cannes Film Festival, she won the prestigious Grand Prix award for “All We Imagine as Light.”
